Meet our new hire — Alexandre Chabeau, UI Full Stack Developer

#9 — This post is the ninth in our “Meet our new hire” series, where we introduce you to the latest additions to our team here at Blank. It’s important for us to keep you updated with what’s going on behind the scenes and let you know who we are.

This week we’re introducing Alexandre Chabeau as our latest hire! He has joined the team as a full-stack developer and will be applying his skill-set to our wallet as we lead up to release. With both a creative and technical side, we’re sure he’s going to hit the ground running. We look forward to seeing him work in our rapidly expanding team.

What’s your job position?

I’m a full stack developer. I’ll be working as a part of the UI team to improve Blank Wallet’s UI. I have a sensibility for UI design and interactivity so I think I’ll fit right in. In simple terms, I’ll be making sure the wallet looks nice.

How long have you worked as a full stack developer?

I started working as a front-end developer in 2016 and made the switch to a full stack developer about a year ago. While I was studying applied arts, I found that I enjoyed programming in some of my projects. After learning how to code small HTML websites, I quickly moved on to 3D interfaces. I’ve recently begun applying what I’ve learned to blockchain and learning more about back-end development. As far as programming languages go, I work with JavaScript, Solidity, React, HTML, CSS, and a little bit of Python.

Which projects have you worked on before?

My first real job was with DotControl in Rotterdam. They’re a digital agency that does a lot of work with data. I mainly worked as a front-end developer and helped them build a user interface for an app. Beyond that, I did a lot of freelance work while studying. One of my favorite projects that I’ve worked on is Lynx, a French company that makes VR headsets. I’ve also had the opportunity to work with some luxury brands like Cartier and Louis Vuitton during my time in Paris, but it was primarily executive work. I’m a creative person so it’s important for me to have the chance to build things.

When did you first get involved in crypto?

Like a lot of people, I got involved around the 2017 bull run. I didn’t fully understand crypto at the time, but it interested me and I started investigating. Over time I got more and more into crypto as I started understanding it better. A big turning point for me was when I began researching smart contracts and decentralized systems. After that, I started seeing blockchain’s potential.

What do you like the most about crypto?

I like the philosophy behind cryptocurrency. You might think it’s just digital money but once you scratch the surface it goes a lot deeper. Economics has directed civilization since the beginning of mankind, so a financial system that binds everyone together and promotes trust and personal freedom is a big game-changer.

Right now cryptocurrency is like the Wild West. Some view it as just a speculative asset, while others think it will change the world forever. People are constantly experimenting and there’s enough room for different opinions and perspectives. If you believe in something, you can share your vision and have an impact.

What made you interested in Blank?

I first heard about Blank on Twitter and wondered how a privacy-focused wallet would work on the Ethereum network. It got me interested because it always surprised me how little people cared about privacy when using MetaMask or other wallets. A lot of people don’t know how easy it is to spy on blockchain and get sensitive information.

The idea behind Blank is really smart, and I think it will take off as more people become aware of the privacy issues on blockchain. Ethereum is a giant of the cryptocurrency space and it looks like it’s here to stay so a privacy solution for the Ethereum network is a great concept.

Why do you think privacy matters on blockchains?

I think it’s safe to say that the future currencies will be digital, we just don’t know what that future will look like yet. My biggest concern is not knowing how our data will be used in the future. As everything becomes more and more digitalized, you leave a larger digital footprint that is easier to track. You don’t want your data to be somewhere and not be in control of it or not know how it’s being used. In today’s world, we lose more and more privacy every day, so finding a solution is crucial.

Do you have any predictions on where crypto will be 5 years from now?

Speculation is high right now and it’s really easy for big institutions to make a lot of money. I think that there will be less volatility and perhaps more regulations on the financial side of things in the future.

I don’t think there will be a “killer app” that becomes the undisputed champion of blockchain, like Google or Amazon. The ecosystem can be fragile so different systems could rise and fall. Web 3.0 will probably continue to grow and we’ll see more apps based on trust and identity. I would love to see identity management on blockchain, or funding management that avoids debt at all costs. Everything is changing so fast so it’s really hard to predict.

It’d also be great to see more concern for privacy and data collection in general. There is so much data collected nowadays that we don’t need and I think it’ll become a big question in the future.

Parting thoughts

Overall I’m really happy to be here and work with people that share the same interests as me. It’s a friendly community and the crypto world is constantly growing so it will be interesting to see what is next.

It’s good to build programs that can’t lie, but we are all humans so it’s important to trust each other.
